A team of researchers was shocked when they scanned a 1000 year old buddha statue and found a mummified human body inside. The statue, which was on loan from a museum in China had been hiding a secret for centuries. The body belonged to a Buddhist monk who had practiced self-mummification, a rare and extreme form of meditation. The monk, who is believed to be Liuquan of the Chinese Meditation School, had starved himself and ingested toxic substances to preserve his flesh after death. The scan also revealed that the monk's organs had been replaced by paper scrolls with Chinese writing on them.

In fact many statues were made that way in the old times. A dead baby inside the statue of a baby, a giant inside the statue of a giant, animals in animal statues.. it’s an old practice. So to have mummy inside of a metal box is not weird .. less weird in fact.

Self-mummification is probably the dumbest thing anyone can do. They’re trying to simulate a real phenomenon that occurs when a person reaches the final incarnation and the body doesn’t decompose after death.
