Seat airbag explosion / deployment, front SIPS Volvo 850 - VOTD

This video shows how a Volvo 850 Seat side air bag deploys when triggered. It has a manual trigger that deploys when it detects a pressure impact from a side impact collision. The airbag comes out of the side of the seat.

I have read where people were hit broad side by a pick up truck traveling about 40 mph and was able to unfasten their seat belt and crawl out the other side with minor injury.

Volvo was the first to use the 3 point shoulder seat belt, the first to add it to the back seats, the first to make airbags standard equipment in the front seats for driver and passenger and the first to install side airbags (in 1995).

My "00 V70T5 has a ripped seam on the backrest. By seeing how this airbag comes thru that same seam tells me i probably need special yarn to sew mine back up. Your videos are a blessing to the world wide Volvo community and have helped me figure stuff out many times! Lots of love from Holland

Saabs and Volvos are the 2 Swedish cars that have been rated as the top two safest vehicles on the market. I used to drive a '96 Saab 900s back in the day, until it got totaled.

I just tried it with a spare seat of my old 850. Took me 3 blows with a hammer. It's really very loud like a gun, ear protection is a must!

I am preparing a 2005 XC70 for an enduro race and have to remove the side seat airbags. Is there a way to get the airbags out without removing the seats from the car? Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert. I have a question. How can I turn off passenger airbag to use a child seat on a front seat? I know that’s possible. But can’t find how.

850 2.4ccm 144hp 1996. Europe.
