Letters in math look weird. Math doesn't need variables or unspecified constants. We cannot make sense of any situation without specifying all involved objects, explicitly. Pronouns in general, not good stuff. Nasty little things.

I often see people say they were "good at math until letters got involved, " but honestly that first step into generalization and abstraction is where math really begins. The graph of x^2 is about saying what every number squared is at once, not any individual arithmetic problem of squaring.

Nice. I really think most people who have a problem with that are intimidated by the idea of adding that small level of abstraction. I think, to them, it's like suddenly having to operate in a dark room, but they don't realize there's no need to worry, because it's the same room they've been operating in, and they just have to continue to do what they've been doing.

Not to mention that I think the idea of deviating from numbers is uncomfortable, and I think there's an societally-enforced mindset of "numbers in math are hard", so people go into it "knowing" it will be hard.
