‘The Steyning’, 1200 Makaroro Road, Tikokino.

Welcome to the “The Steyning”, this wonderful property is situated west of Highway 50, in the Tikokino district of Central Hawke’s Bay.

The Steyning is an award winning operation of some 300 ha effective. In 2010 our vendors were judged to be the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ of the Year. This was only the second time in the 38 year history of the competition that an exclusive deer farm has won the competition. In the same year, Tim Aitken and Lucy Robertshawe were also awarded the NZ Deer Farmers Association Environmental and Sustainable Award with Distinction. Add to these, the 2012 Marks and Spencer’s International Supplier of the year, cumulating in the title of Champion of Champions, the 2015 Waitrose Farming Partnership Awards and more recently, the 2016 Balance Environmental Awards East Coast - Finalist and Winner of the Land Stewardship Award, and you can easily appreciate the level care and pride taken in the outstanding Central Hawke’s Bay property.

Consisting both Kopua and Raumati silt loams, the ‘Steyning’ consists of approximately 100 hectares of flat land with the balance described as easy rolling with some steeper sidlings. The easy – rolling hills lie mainly to the south with shelter provided by numerous Totara trees and other ornamental plantings.

Water is supplied to the flats by way of troughs, with water reticulated from a permanent spring, which also supplies the dwellings. This water supply underwent a major redevelopment in 2005. The balance of the farm is watered by way of dams, springs and permanent streams.

Ongoing development of shelter belts and wetlands, preserving native trees and the retiring of 7.6 ha of native bush to DOC in 1995 has been important to our vendors. An environmental plan identifies 6000 trees excluding the DOC reserve. The trees were counted to calculate a carbon footprint for a sustainable farming fund project. The numerous Totara trees and areas of native bush provide for an aesthetically pleasing farm, while most waterways have been fenced and planted.

Some 55 paddocks are all deer fenced. A central lane to the deer shed provides for easy stock movement, while other imporvements include: a 165m2 deer handling complex built in 2010, 4-bay implement shed, including workshop, 4-bay haybarn come implement shed, stables with two loose boxes, truck shed, 3-stand woolshed and cattle yards.

A large wetland area of approximately 1.9 hectares has been developed into a duckshooting lake. The native plantings and natural vegetation make this an ideal duck breeding habitat.

The homestead is a 266 sq mtr 1920’s villa, that in 1998, underwent extensive renovations including a new roof, wiring plumbing and insulation.

This is an aesthetically appealing property with a strong conservation focus on the development and enhancement of wetland areas, native plantings and conservation of the extensive Totara tree population. A quality deer farm in an area of Central Hawke’s Bay with a reputation of producing stock of the highest quality.
