I'm guessing he left the coffee because the first time I came to Japan I noticed that no one really eats, drinks or smokes while walking. Not sure why though.

You can definitely date without speaking the same language! My parents didn’t speak the same language the whole time they dated (8 months) and that was back at a time when you needed a dictionary to translate everything!
