Here at the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP), we have just launched a novel study to investigate how psilocybin shapes human perception. This research, the first at UC Berkeley, uses fMRI to uncover how the brain generates visual perceptions and how this process changes during the psychedelic experience. By focusing on the visual system, researchers aim to shed light on how psychedelics work in the brain and the mechanisms behind their potential for treating mental health disorders. Insights from this study could not only optimize psychedelic-assisted therapy but also provide a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between the brain, mind, and consciousness. Hear BCSP Faculty Director Professor Michael Silver explain the foundational concepts and what the study hopes to uncover in this short film by Hover Pictures.
