Trending Science - Ohio Fracking Linked to Earthquakes

Показать описание
"Drill baby drill" may not be the favorite phrase of Ohio residents for a while. Two minor and nearly identical earthquakes that recently struck Youngstown near the state's eastern border have been linked to natural gas drilling operations, known as Fracking. State officials asked D&L Energy to stop pressure injecting brine and other liquid waste into an area disposal well, after deciding the process was causing an ancient fault in a deep rock formation to slip, likely creating minor tremors that may last up to a year in the area. Hydraulic fracturing has been suspected in similar seismic activity in Texas and Arkansas. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced a moratorium on creating more disposal wells in the area until further research is completed.
