This was awesome. I'm 27 years old and have surely lived my life with that phrase, "We don't live to work, " thrown around nonstop - way to flip it around and say that work is a gift from God. We rest to work. Not work to rest. I hope many others hear this message, because it's enjoyable and powerful.

I’ve always struggled with work and feeling as if it is pointless. This came from a selfish view of working in that if I’m not doing what I like I’m wasting my time. Last week I had a revelation that no work I do is pointless but it is all meaningful since it is for God. God has put His people in certain places and positions in the workforce for His glory. Thinking about this makes me know that I am not forgotten or neglected when trials occur or when negative/evil thoughts enter my mind about work. I surely can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Make sure that your way of life is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you, ” so that we confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
— Hebrews 13:5-6

What I struggle is, as a Christian now, do I pursue the great comission work, namely sharing the Gospel? Or just regualar work? Which path is to be pursued is my question? Why and why not? The more I learn about this the more I am left confused, its something a deep clarity on

I appreciate this answer. I've been wrestling with burnout and asking myself why to continue, and especially feeling undervalued in my work. I think we must remember a few things.

First, the incentive: we work hard because we love God, and love our neighbor (family, friends, community, etc). That MUST be our fuel, or else we will be prone to complain, become resentful, burnout, etc.

Second, the value: this might be controversial to say, especially in the context of a Capitalist society. But your wealth is NOT your value. Your value comes from being a redeemed child of God, first and foremost. We are called to steward the resources He's given us well, whether much or little. We till the ground, and lay the seeds. But God must give the growth. Whether we're rich or poor has far less to do with our effort than we imagine, but it won't go anywhere if we don't persist (and take wise steps to manage the resources we've been entrusted). Many of the world's richest men are godless, and the mostly godly, many remain quite poor. It is infinitely better to do good and be rich towards God, than to have much wealth in this world but possess a superficial or no relationship with Christ. A lack of wealth is not necessarily a sign of a lack of favor with God, or vice versa.

Third, it is good to rest: it is okay to relax, sleep, and have recreational time after work. It is also not bad to enjoy life or partake in activities that enrich it like art, music, philosophy, science, etc. You are not lazy for taking some time to partake in said activities. However, don't comartmentalize them from God either; have a thankful attitude. And focus on quality, not quantity. Because time is limited, so if you're going to be enriched by them, make them count. They aren't in themsleves things to live for, any more than a career is a thing to live for. We live for God and for our neighbor - but rest and recreation will help you live for those things that do matter.

Thank you for this. Lately I’ve been feeling so demotivated to work. I keep messing up and it feels like such a long chore to do. I like my work but I don’t necessarily love it. Thank you for this fresh, new perspective. As a Christian, I really want to show excellence in my work because I know God desires the best of us, but recently I’ve been feeling so uninspired.

I would like to have the motivation to work harder on some days, especially those days during my holiday from regular work i should study....help me Lord, thank you so much for seeing my need! I therefore bind one to desire to see work as a gift of God while binding to hell every desire to see work as a curse of God in my life, the lives of my family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, acquintances, opponents, the children I teach and the body of Christ, binding to hell every unequal yoke and common share with anyone lacking desire for me, oneself or another to see work as a gift of God, in accordance with this word and colossians 3:23, proverbs 14:23, ecclesiastes 3:12-13, luke 6:38, 2 corinthians 6:14-18 in the name and blood of Jesus Christ, amen and hallelujah, glory to God!

Got it. Our work is our witness of the glory of GOD. Sorry I did not know this, failed to know this. I complained about everything. I now have to have a happy attitude, for the glory of GOD. God give me strength and that right attitude.

Loved this convo. I’m in the little kids season and was rolling this idea around in my mind all day today (finding joy in the mundane tasks)- your video feels like God is responding to me in encouragement. Thank you & God bless you both.

Important to recognize the vocational (vocatio) and calling aspect which amplifies motivation, as Beeke mentions.

It would be interesting to compare our work conditions of today with those 2000 years ago in Israel. What's the same and what has changed?

Thank you God that I live in secular country and have 5 weeks of vacation every year, work is not my god and can spend more time with family and in scriptures. Thank you God for protecting my country from protestant work ethic that is also based on false works based salvation gospel.
