High explosive remains a mystery to a lot of people (and they all tend to scream about it in chat), so hopefully this guide makes things a bit more clear. And yes, I am aware that the tips are not particularly complex, but HE is not a particularly complex shell to use. Let me know in the comments what videos you want to see next! Happy tanking!

This is the change that ruined the game for me. I only started playing a year ago and now I'm at a point where I'm loading half ap and half gold rounds. I see tX in my t8 that 2 key gets slapped before the timer has even ran out cos HE shells can't be used against Hull down tanks due to the laughable damage. So WG got what they wanted, they wanted me to fire more gold and yeah that's basically how it went. The only tank I run HE on is the fv4005 and I only take 4 into battle.

Any videos would be grand, doesn't have to be by shell type. With field mods, equipment 2.0, consumables and crew skills; what are some interesting builds to take advantage of this. I have seen a machine gun Kelly mod for the strv, I wonder what else can be done?

Moral of the video: HE bad, unless you have an actual vendetta against you enemy’s commander or the driver that refuses to stay alive long enough to finish the battle

He is mostly useless now :( I wish the nerf was in between where it was and where it is now. Maybe then it would be reasonably useful. It just encourages more 2 key which is probably the reason for the nerf in the first place; other than appeasing a few hull down heavy tank unicorns perhaps.

So if the new HE shell no longer "explode" outside upon impact, is it still possible to damage/destroy the track by landing the shot near the track ( on the vehicle but not directly on the track) ? Say I want to only destroy the track to stop opponent from moving, what's the difference between the old HE and the new HE in that case? Can I still do that by shooting anywhere on the track? Also, did the rework change anything on HEAT and HESH round?

I really only hate the HE changes to arty, which are obviously different than this. With this version of HE, I still get intuition and swap to HE in my HT or whatever after I've won the flank and hunt down the enemy arty, WT, super hellcat, etc.

It serves it's intended purpose, and isn't just chipping away 100dmg each shot at a chief hull punishing someone for playing their tank correctly.... idk I feel like its derpy like anything WG puts out, but technically is a fair change IMO.

ARTY ON THE OTHER HAND SUCKS AND I STILL TAKE LOADS OF DAMAGE FROM IT NO MATTER MY TANK CHOICE (ok maybe not always, but taking 4-500 from arty in my 60TP or 277 is just absurd. I can live with 150 and some stun, especially if just one or MAYBE 2 in a game)

after getting used to war thunders HE penetration mechanics, the ones in world of tanks just seem stupid. Like the "cone" of damage instead of near spherical fragmentation of HE in WT. Also angles shouldnt matter when trying to pen with HE as long as the detonator makes contact with enough armor, If HE detonates on contact the distance to the armor would be about the same thus meaning penetration should be near the same value despite angle, but hey wot is more arcade ish.

The behaviour is so stupid. It does not work like HE now. It's like a HEAT shell with a fuse sensitivity equivalent to it's penetration value.

All this proves is how little WG knows about how HE shells actually work 😒

I know, I know, its just a game and not a sim. But when they put so much emphasis on armour thickness and angles but can't get this even remotely close to reality, it makes a mockery of all else.

A HE shell will explode upon impact with a wall or any skirting around a vehicle.

The only reason now to carry HE is for those occasions when you need to make sure you can stop the cap with certainty..
While simultaneously making sure that you can't save a losing battle by taking the cap and angling to protect the onslaught as the cap can now be stopped by any tank on the battlefield no matter how big the capping tank is or how smart the player is.

I absolutely hate it when I no longer can track and damage a tank by shoot HE next to it. No plash damage is utter BS and stupid considering what this game had always been about.
If you look at the HE shell description, there is "Burst Radius"...well that is fucking useless now isn't it. Can't reset cap by shooting next to enemy behind a cover...
HE was there to counter raw armour and hull-down-impenetrable-turret tanks. No one, absolutely no one running around and spamming HE anymore, what are you on about?
Number 8 point is absolutely stupid. If everyone follow your advise, one whole is flank open. Now considering the Italian TDs are out and impenetrable as well, the alternative flank is full of hull down cover, the game is fucked. Just exit the battle...
