“Shilpa Sena Exposition” Colombo, 18-21 July 2019
The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Science Technology and Research will be held at the BMICH from July 18 to July 21. The first of the series of exhibitions that are to be held under the ‘Shilpa Sena’ program got underway on Thursday with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday. The Prime Minister looks at a satellite model which was on display at the exhibition at BMICH. Science Technology and Research Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe was also present at the opening.
The inaugural “Shilpa Sena,” exhibition, showcasing Sri Lanka’s technological revolution commences today. This exhibition will create an awareness among the people by promoting science, technology, research while facilitating innovative and scientific entrepreneurs and attracting international investors for the production and marketing of their products.
The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Science Technology and Research will be held at the BMICH from today to July 21.
Science, Technology and Research Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe said the main objective of the exhibition is to create a platform to impart knowledge to the general public and to connect innovators with the private sector and entrepreneurs for more business opportunities.
Minister Senasinghe addressing a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday said that science, technology and research are the main factors of economic development. However, only the educated and intellectuals in our country pay little attention to these sectors,” he added.
“We believe that a higher level of community participation can be achieved through the adoption of simple methodologies to communicate with the people, especially in the Sinhala language. The exhibition is held under five categories- technology, entrepreneurship and job fair, innovation, blue-green economy,” he said.
“Science, technology, and innovation have become a pioneering factor in the economic development process. Sri Lanka ranks 88th in the World Innovation Index and we have a target of reaching the 60th position within the next four to five years. Therefore, we have to revive, encourage and invest more money in the scientific, technology and research and innovation sectors. Therefore, it is important to create a research culture within the country through driving research institutions, universities, scientists, technologies and researches towards a common goal,” he added.
Under the technology cluster, science, technology and research knowledge will be disseminated under 12 themes with the inclusion of STEM education. This cluster aims at imparting the latest technological knowledge to school students, university students, and emerging researchers as well as popularizing the field of science, technology and research in the society.
More than 500 innovations of local inventors will be on display under the innovation cluster, while a prgramme for their commercialization will also be implemented.
One thousand technology packages will be introduced to those who are already engaged in small and medium scale industries and to those interested in embarking in new industries under the entrepreneurship and job fare cluster.
The exhibition will also offer the public an opportunity to buy products at reasonable prices.
The Minister further said the exhibition will be expanded to other districts for the benefit of rural masses, innovators and entrepreneurs in the future.
