I've noticed that by using the 30 60 90 triangle rule you can solve this in less time. Since the hyp = 8, the adj = 4 (½*8) and the opp (½*8)*(√3).

If you remember soh cah toa the sine would of been, opposite over hypotenuses which is y/8. He does not want to find y in the first operation of the video he is looking for x.
