What do you think of Pixar’s latest film Luca? Let me know!

I thought this film was amazing. It’s a film about growing up and discovering the world. Every time Luca daydreams, it’s about something new that he learned about the world. He imagines flying an old fashioned airplane through space, vespas as wild animals, and swimming in space with anchovies to touch the moon. When he imagines flying through the sky and seeing the world on a Vespa, he only sees islands with tiny houses because that’s all he’s seen of the world. He is creative and smart. He fixes the phonograph and realizes that they can make a Vespa with stuff from the island. If you think this movie isn’t grand, think about it from Luca’s perspective. Imagine if you’ve only lived with your family and herded fish and never seen anything. We know what Italy looks like. We know what pasta is. Since Pixar has existed, it has shown us new fantastic worlds. Porto Rosso is the new fantastic world that is unimaginable to Luca. They could have easily created emotional moments like a talk between Alberto and Julia’s father, but instead they show us. We see Julia’s father go searching for Alberto which is something his own father would have never done. We see moments like Alberto telling Luca that his parents would never come looking for him. He was alone for so long. I liked the fact that Julia’s stomach got upset from eating the pasta so she wasn’t that fast. I love the villain cause he is probably my age and still competing against children just for himself and money. Parts of it did feel like a Ghibli film, the dream sequences reminded me of The Wind Rises. Alberto had lots of abandonment issues. I want everyone to realize that before he met Luca, he was alone on the island for who knows how long. He had to grow up quick. He doesn’t have a desire to go to school. I like how they went down different paths. Alberto will be happy in a community and not be alone anymore which is what he wanted. Luca gets to learn about the world. The beginning of the movie didn’t really show us what Luca’s life was like because it was boring and small compared to the outside world. There were moments when I laughed because of how it was like The Little Mermaid. The townspeople were accepting so quickly because two old women, who probably were part of the community their whole lives, showed that they were sea monsters too. Not all of the townspeople did. Some of them were intimidated by Julia’s dad and gave up trying to kill them. Then they also saw two parents coming to hug their child and say how worried they were. It was just a family. The ending of the movie was perfect. Alberto never really wanted a Vespa. He wanted to go on adventures with Luca. Luca realizes he can’t leave Alberto alone so he gives up school. Alberto gives up the Vespa so that Luca can go to school and see the world. Alberto has a father figure, not a parent because he knows how to survive on his own and is pretty grown up. Luca assumes that Alberto is coming with him to school. Alberto was with him every step of the way as he was discovering the world. Now he has to do it on his own. The last shot of Luca looking out into the ocean and the island and all he has ever known soaked in the rain in his true form shows that he is ready to discover the world by himself as himself. The credits of the movie really showed us what everyone’s lives were like after the end of the movie. This was a Pixar masterpiece. I can’t accept any different answer.

The ending was good. But, if they would’ve built up the characters more it would’ve been more impactful.

Thank you! Finally someone who understands how I felt about this movie, it just really didn’t get to me to be honest, I mean for me at least I didn’t feel any emotion throughout the whole movie

I’m sorry I understand most people will disagree with my thoughts here: I totally agree with the very little character development issue, I also found myself caring so little about Luca’s parents the entire movie. Not only that but I felt like the grandma was so underused, I thought that she was a great character but not highlighted as much as others. Not only that I thought that the whole plot was simple but so predictable. I understand it was a kids movie so it can’t have too many plot twists but in moves like Toy Story and incredibles 1 and 2. They were written so beautifully and some plot twists came perfectly. Also this movie made no sense at times. I understand that it’s a kids movie but wanting to kill sea monsters to loving them made no sense to me. Idk I guess my wrestling background here hurts my thoughts in this case. I loved the villain, and I thought the voice actor did an amazing job. The true highlight of the movie for me. And the ending for me came so late, it felt like the clock was ticking and the movie kept going and going and going. But overall I thought that this movie was sub par at best with a very forgettable plot.

I honestly don't get some of the backlash against Luca. Yes it's a smaller film with smaller stakes, but I don't think that's a true negative. I thought it was a sweet story with relatable characters and it warmed my heart at the end of the day. The scale and feel and wholesomeness of this movie reminded me a lot of some of Studio Ghibli's films.

I respect Pixar for trying something new, but this felt like I was watching a few episodes of a TV series mashed into a movie by George Lucas. There are 2 types of movies that I like: High-stakes movies and solid comedies that hardly have any consequences. This movie tries to dive in between these 2 aspects and therefore makes both of them weak. The first interactions between Alberto and Luca feel rushed with montages, and the ending feels incomplete. Sure Luca's going to school, but the movie acts as if school is the last point of success, as if it's the end of the story. But it's not. Of course Pixar's reputation is still strong, but this movie felt bland like Onward and lifeless like The Good Dinosaur.

I agree with your opinions, still a funny movie. Not bad for a movie with no theatrical release

Its simpler story simultaneously bugs and delights me. I’m kinda in the middle but my score (7/10) is still positive

It’s kind of like another little mermaid

The voice cast, messages, score and (of course) animation is good, but it fell so flat for me. It felt so pointless and I'm glad we agree on this one!

I enjoyed Luca! I get what you mean by the character development, but for me I thought we got enough from it in the first hour to understand the direction then it offers more overtime. Good writing overall, though some inconsistencies with when the water makes them change and how much of their body changes. Not the most clever plot but its solid on its own terms 8.3/10

I'm personally not a big fan of Pixar I find it very overrated. I personally think DreamWorks makes better animated movies.
