Robot Bees will soon take over the world! John Iadarola and Matt Atchity break it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

"The drones would carry pollen from one plant to another, using sensors and cameras to detect the locations of the crops.

First spotted by CB Insights, the robot bee patent appears along five other patents for farming drones, including one that would identify pests and another that would monitor crop health. Walmart did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment."

NerdAlert is a talk and discussion show for the well-rounded nerd, bringing you tech news, gaming, geek culture and more EVERY DAY of the week with host Kim Horcher and friends. Proudly part of the TYT Network.

why pay the expense of making a robo bee, when removing the source that kills the bees in the first place is cheaper and likely to fix other problems in the first place?

The part that scares me isn't 'robot bees' so much as 'patent filed by walmart.' I've played enough shadowrun to know where this is going.

And the military versions of those bees will have deadly poison in their stingers.

This is why I'm concerned, rather than "against" robot bees or even more impressive, Drop Pollination. IF these pollination mechanized methods work well, then the growers will now have to be less concerned about environmental impact than before. There is no $$$ encouragement for them to practice eco-friendly farm plots if they no longer need living insects to exist and pollinate their crops. We already have an uphill climb to protect and preserve bio-diversity. Now, with Drop Pollination proving to be more effective than actual bees, we "could" be in trouble environmentally while they see their crop yields and profits rise without the bees. The tiny bee robots are not so effective as are the new drop-systems which are showing strong results.

Good luck on getting honey from a robot bee.

It's the power companies spraying your power lines. And your road maintenance not wanting to have to mow the sides of the road. And of course Monsanto, in many horrible ways.

That whole episode of Black Mirror I'm like, "get some fucking ear plugs". And if that is to low tech, how about a microwave jammer.

Wtf is Wal-Mart doing in such a specific field of research?

So... Are they equipped with cameras? Something that small shouldn't be allowed to have cameras in civilization

My concern is what if robo bees malfunction don't work as intended or is somehow hacked and reprogrammed to contaminate food instead of pollinating it. What if used to launch biological attack? I think we need to figure out how to save the actual insect 🐝🐝 bees.

I think this is just a PR piece, it would be cheaper for walmart to host their own hives then to develop robot bees....

Why are there robot bees that spray insecticide?
