Keep in mind that the color will intensify with the heat of the firing. The color is paler and lighter at Cone 5 than at Cone 10. Make sure the underglaze you buy works at the temperature you choose and matches the firing temperature for the clay body you're working with. For outdoor pieces, fire at least to Cone 6. Lower firing leaves the clay porous enough for water to enter, freeze, and then expand, cracking the piece.

I have some bisque fired works, my question is: wether it is possible to use underglaze, let it dry then apply thin layer of normal glaze on top and fired it that way creating a transparent effect? Or is it possible to paint to whole item with underglaze but then galze some stripes on top during the same firing?

Could you help me understand the whole process here:
1. You bisque fire a piece first, and then,
2. You apply the underglaze.

What happens afterwards? I couldn't find any good resource which tells this process from start till the end. Hoping to get an answer from you!
