What is the BARKING SOUND on Airbus planes??? #shorts

I'm sure many of you have heard this sound before?
Yes I does sound like a barking dog, or someone trying to start a malfunction chainsaw in belly of the airplane.
But in actual fact what you can hear here, is the PTU on Airbus airplane.
PTU stands for Power transfer Unit.
The PTU comes on either during engine start or engine shutdown.
The green & yellow hydraulic systems, the normal source of pressure is the Engine Driven Pump and the auxiliary source is the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The PTU is a hydraulic motor pump which transfers hydraulic power between the green and yellow systems without transfer of fluid. It operates automatically, whenever the pressure differential between the two systems reaches 500 PSI. Which is the case during engine start or shutdown on the ground!

I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

If you take an X-ray of the aircraft, you’d realize it’s got the Dawg in it.

Never heard it compared to a barking dog before. I've heard passengers laughing comparing it to someone tightening a bolt with an electric screwdriver, or sawing something with a saw...

im convinced its the dog that barks to keep the pilots awake, can't change my mind

I was really wondering several times. Thanks mate

I used to think it has to do something with the flaps or hydraulics to get the pressure high, now I know what it actually is

It is actually during the SECOND engine start on ground. Because during the first engine start, the PTU is inhibited and during the second engine start it will perform a self test.

I was on a flight once and Someone behind me said “they are changing the tries” will we were taxiing I broke down laughing 😂

Have heard that many times, but I assumed it was the sound made by the hydraulic system for Flap extension. The Airbus puppy!!
That's one of the most amusing posts in these series.

Aww that would explain the "distressed dogs " I heard on many flights I was on years ago. Nice to know no dogs are suffering 🙂.

Thanks for the free education ☺️!

I hope all your flights are safe and uneventful!

May your day also be most wonderful

I always wanted to play "who let the dogs out" song, and pause it so that the PTU completes the "woof woof" line. 😁

You need to do a whole series to explain all the noises!

I did some hydraulic bleeds today on a G650. Quietest PTU ever.

obligatory "why do you pity me"

It's so fun watching non-avgeeks look around in confusion when the ptu kicks in.

I always though "whose sawing wood on the flight!?"

sometimes it really sounds like a dog, but also sometimes like someone cleaning a window, mostly when it‘s faster and dog when it‘s slower 😁

For years now I've always thought it was the motors for the latch on the cargo bay door 'tightening up' using hydrolics 😂

On the F-14 it was called the Bi-directional pump or Bi-di for short, if a system lost pressure the pump would come on at a certain pressure and if it maintained pressure all was good. If the system that lost pressure kept losing pressure even with the pump then it would shut off and you flew on the remaining system. there was an electric hydraulic system that would isolate the stabilizers and rudders if both main system lost pressure, but that was to get you to where you could eject, no power for flaps, landing gear, brakes or wing sweep.

Thanks for the explanation. I often wondered what that sound was. Now I know.

When I was young my dad told me they were cutting the door down with a chainsaw as a joke 💀

So I recently came across a case flying the A320 where the PTU was making the barking sound up till takeoff thrust, and this sound began again on Final Approach and lasted until engine shutdown. I don’t think this is normal, since I’ve not heard it last so long before, or come on during landing phase. Wondering if anyone had any ideas on what could be going on, would love to see a video covering this, and perhaps even other possible malfunctions.
