Sky Soldiers in Spain – We Are NATO

Sky Soldiers are U.S. Army paratroopers assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. They arrived at Zaragoza Air Base, Spain as part of exercise Swift Response 23. The exercise features the Spanish airborne brigade, Brigada Paracaidista, leading three near-simultaneous airborne operations in Estonia, Greece, and Spain.

#SwiftResponse23 is designed to ensure Allied troops are ready to respond to any threats against NATO Allies. This is one of three major exercises that make up the Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness 2023 or DEFENDER 23 across the Baltic Sea and Mediterranean regions.

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S.-European Command directed multi-national, joint exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S. and NATO Allies and partners.
DEFENDER 23 will:
•take place from 22 April to 23 June
•include more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service-members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations
•demonstrate U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s ability to quickly aggregate combat power in Eastern Europe
•build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment
