Do you need FULL FRAME for VIDEO? Sensor Sizes compared.

Everybody wants that Full Frame look due to the great shallow depth of field or bokeh.
But is that actually true? Not really! In this video I show you how each Sensor Size affects the image.

Imagine. Audiences walking out of theaters saying: “my god. It’s clearly not shot in full frame!” 😆

No one needs full frame. It works for some projects, but I feel like it is overused currently.

Great showcase to explain this. It can get very confusing but you have made it clear

Thank you for the comparison. But, you have actually shown what do we mean when we say the 'full frame look'. At 03:32 one can clearly see that although the backgrounds have identical blurs, the relationship of the subject to the background and to the viewer have changed. In the full frame sensor, the subject is closer to the viewer, is more pronounced and has a certain character of its own. In the Super 35 mode, the character is away from the viewer and when compared to the full frame, the character has become one with the background. I think the full frame sensor brings the subject closer to the viewer and also makes it the most important thing in the frame. A small anecdote. I was shooting a documentary with my A7S. One of the characters looked herself when I played back the video on the back screen. She exclaimed that there is something magical about the image. She has never seen her 'like that' in an image before. A full frame sensor is also very flattering to the subject. And, that is directly connected to the still photography lineage. The full frame look is the single most thing which is stopping me from getting into the Blackmagic ecosystem.

It's a bit of a semantics argument tbh. You can say well the sensor doesn't give you a shallower depth of field because they look the same in your example with the crop, but when you match the field of view, obviously the full frame is shallower...so its like technically its a combination of many factors affecting that result, but the result is the same...which is at the same framing its shallower on the full frame...from the testing I have done over the past year, my conclusion really is, that a camera is at its optimal performance when it is being used with a lens designed for that camera...i.e. use full frame lenses with full frame cameras, or S35 lenses with and S35 sensor, and you will see the best shallow depth of field, the least amount of distortion on your subject, and the optimal sharpness. You can achieve very similar results on S35 just using an S35 designed lens. So you are right in pick the best tool for you job

Lets say 4k video, same codecs, same resolution but shot bu different sensor sizes so I want to know is there any difference in video quality shot by different size sensors ?

I'm a filmmaker who uses the Panasonic GH5s and GH5 and I've managed to make some reasonably okay films, but I am considering full frame for better low light.

It all depends what locations you are working in and how much depth of field you want. Full frame makes it easier to shoot in smaller places.

Thanks, that I didn‘t know. So Full Frame gives you More schallow Dof on a wide Shot Right¿

FINALLY... someone who understands that DOF is in the lens and has nothing to do with sensor size!

I don't need full frame, but people think that the other sensor size's aren't good

Thanks for this I always got full frame cameras for that reason of being in tight area and not having the option to back up.

I live the look but mainly it’s the ability to have options on sets that we can’t move.

A quick question I was going to get the Komodo but the crop on slomo plus not being full frame and of course the price made me think to save money and maybe just get a BM 6k pro and kit it out. Plus I would have extra money left over.

But I saw that you sold yours for the zcam do you still think that was a good choice?

Was looking at FX6 as well and now I’m undecided.

I normally rent gear but this time I want to have a body and rent the rest of the gear depending on the shoot.

I have money for them all but trying to be smart with how I use that money. Any advice would be great as I’ve read and watched about 100 videos on them all and I’m still undecided.

I've done shooting in and outdoors with mft. 37mm or 58mm for outdoors and 14mm for indoors, no probbums.
And no boke with mft? yeah right...

If you shoot low light run and Gun it definitely has an advantage.

shallow DOF test - why you didn't put longer lenses on FF camera to show DOF difference, without moving camera. This test will show how blurrier background will be comparing to the s35 sensor.

I don't need a full frame for video. I prefer S35.
