Is It Important to Type in Code From Coding Exercises?

When you're learning how to program, is it necessary to follow along a coding exercise or to type in a code from a book to your computer? Most courses or books provide exercises or challenges to test if you've picked up on a certain topic. In this video, I will discuss it's importance so keep on watching.

My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.

In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.

Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm real qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

I've been taking your Java Masterclass course, and each time I type what is in the lecture, I make sure to add some comments as to what the program is doing, such as a multi-line for methods, and single line comments for something very important (like a new utility). I also try to do the challenges and then see if I can incorporate what I learned in my individual project I'm working on. Thanks for making things clear in the course, and not showing us everything so we learn how to look things up! Looking forward to starting the Spring course.

Thanks Tim, the last challenge I found very good in its lateral complexity. I didn’t finish the code using your str.function() however after a few days I had a working solution. It wasn’t 100% pass by any means but the act of researching and working through previous videos helped in developing problem solving skills and using code learned. I know that if it took 6 days to solve this challenge the next challenge will take slightly less time because I’ve got the basics in my head. If you don’t work at the exercises you won’t get the point of the challenges.

I would add, that you should make a note of the coding challenges that you have a problem with, and the next day, or a few days later, go back and try it again, see if you can get through it without any help or notes. When you can, you probably sufficiently understand that part of the material, and should be safe to move on with the course.

Hi Tim,

Is it possible to spend too much time with rewatching earlier videos again, or thinking too much about the solution of a certain challenge? Is there a time limit, when you should "give it up", and check the solution?

Hey Tim, great video, but i have a question
Do you think people will stop writing codes and use blocks to code? like Scratch, Blockly...etc i mean will this be the future for programmers?
Thanks and sorry for my weak English
