The maximum pause breath hold is an incredibly useful tool as part of the Buteyko Breathing Method for asthma, as taught at Buteyko Clinic. Alongside light breathing, it can help to reduce asthma symptoms and improve quality of life. This is one of the reasons why Buteyko Clinic typically sees a reduction of 50% of symptoms within two weeks of practicing daily breathing exercises.

In this video, Director of Education and Training Patrick McKeown explains the importance of maximum pause, its place in Buteyko Breathing Method and how it works to help improve your breathing. Patrick also notes that the maximum pause is not an exercise for everyone as the act of holding the breath for a prolonged period of time can be quite stressful.

So how do we do the maximum pause? For instance, after outbreath or just like as if we'd take a dive?
