1980: Rare Early Footage of Lady Diana Spencer

To commemorate the Princess of Wales on the 25th anniversary of her passing, ITN Archive is presenting a series of clips covering her years of public service between 1980 and 1997.

This clip, from 18 September 1980, may be the earliest-recorded news footage of Lady Diana Spencer. It was captured when rumours first surfaced of her romantic involvement with the Prince of Wales.

There is a lot to note in this short clip, from the camera’s uncertainty of what Diana looks like, to the 19-year-old's efforts to escape the unwanted press attention.

They both try to hide beneath their hair and duck their heads.

She was so lovely and unappreciated by some. A bit of humanity goes a long way. Her determination in not giving the paps their shot here just makes her even more admirable and endearing!!🥲

After Diana died, one of her sisters gave an interview and said that Diana was religious about putting on her seatbelt. In this video, Diana automatically reaches for the seatbelt and so it is true. The night she died there must’ve been something wrong with the seatbelt.
