The NPC on Thursday unanimously endorseda new CCP measure for Hong Kong that will give a pro-Beijing committee the power to appoint lawmakers in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. The measure adds to a crackdown against Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, which erupted in 2019 in response to a now defunct proposal that would allow extradition to mainland China. Part of the new election measures will be appointing a vetting committee to ensure Hong Kong's public officials are "patriots" who are loyal to the CCP. Critics say the measure will lead to the removal of the political opposition from Hong Kong's government. At the 2020 NPC session, the CCP introduced its controversial national security law for Hong Kong, which criminalizes acts that Beijing considers to be sedition, subversion or collusion with foreign powers. The law, which was put in force in July 2020, has drawn international condemnation as a crackdown on civil liberties. So far, 47 former Hong Kong legislators and pro-democracy figures have been arrestedon subversion charges.

Looks like US has overplayed it's HK card and have permanently lost it. Now let's see how it'll play the Taiwan card.

Why even call it a parliament?? That’s an insult to the word.

Exactly! Freedom in Hong Kong is toasted. In fact free democracies around the world are headed for being an endangered species. People in these currently freer places have no idea where their freedoms come from or how to maintain them either. So freedom is on the way out.

2895 voted for, 0 against, and 1 abstained. Is it absolutely anonymous? Is he/she still alive?

Last time I check, HK wasn't a Democracy under British colonial rule. How did this "Democracy" thing suddenly come to place?

YOUR COUNTRY in the past signed a treaty between the UK so that YOUR COUNTRY respect HK's autonomoscy for 40 YEARS. YOUR COUNTRY went back on it's promise by reunifying earlier than the promised date

Hong Kong has:
its own Political System, Economic system, its own Currency, and its own Legal system.
They also don't pay a single cent in tax to Beijing.
By all definition of the word Autonomy, Hong Kong has a high degree of autonomy.
The deal was to allow Hong Kong "high degree of autonomy" NOT "Full autonomy".
The SIno-British Joint declaration mentioned nothing about democracy.

Wow I'm really shocked at the Chinese Politburo unanimous decision. They're usually such mavericks and free thinkers.

It‘s not a matter if Hong Kong belongs to China or not. It‘s a matter of Democracy. As long as China remains a cruel dictatorship, Hong Kong 🇭🇰 should stay independent. Eventually, when China starts a path of Democracy, they can return.

You don't call social unrest and violence democracy. I'm sure no country would allow sepristism within their own border's. I imagine that if California were to vote to be independent the US would have deployed the national guard and purge all those in charge.
