Food is not only culture, it's diplomacy: Leah Selim at TEDxGowanus

Leah Selim is a co-founder of Global Kitchen, a social enterprise that hosts immigrant-led cooking classes to promote cultural exchange and awareness through food. In her recent TEDx talk, she discussed how food, identity, environment and politics intersect - contributing to a larger concept known as "gastrodiplomacy". It is through the communal act of sharing food that ideas can be exchanged freely, an essential first step in growing a community.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

We shared the same feeling about fast food when you said that Mexico is known by their "tacos". Just to mention, in Mexico we have a lot of influence of French cuisine, by the way, chocolate was invented by Mexicans, and Mexicans were the ones that gave chocolate to the world. Thank you for your video!

@leah Selim This is truly an impressive way of portrayal of food. The relationship between food and culture is very intriguing and shapes the environment that we live in

For anyone interested in the subject matter, this should be a delightful, with sobering food for thought nonetheless.

I feel her. I remember the fisrt time I got sick in America in my exchange I just wanted my mom's soup canja de galinha, very common in Brazil for sick people and it's so delicious.
Also when my host family wanted me to feel welcome they took me to a Brazilian barbecue restaurnt, very common around here, and Although it wasn't nearly as good as the food we eat in Brazil, it was nice to eat it. Food is home, guys
