I don't think Beerus ever truly intended to destroy the earth because it has too many delicious foods he likes. He was just saying those things because of his reputation as a destroyer god to install fear into the people of Earth and to challenge the warriors of the planet like Goku.

Honestly, I think he was always going to only destroy just a little bit of Earth once he learned how good the food is. If the Super Saiyan God thing didn't pan out, he might've just claimed he'd eaten too much and some stomach cramps or something was preventing him from fully destroying the planet

I scuffed at Goku becoming the new Destroyer when this came out, but a fan comic called Dragon Ball Hakai came out and kinda changed my mind.

Goku is full of mercy. Sure, he might spare too many planets, but a Destroyer's job is destroy only that which can't be saved. Goku is actually very good at that.
