Being a month ahead does make budgeting so much easier. I did get mine ahead by saving those "extra" paychecks for a year. My other suggestions would be:
1. Tax Refund
2. Make it a short term sinking fund
3. You could even temporarily change your W4 with-holdings to get more money in your paychecks and save that money until the goal is met.
4. Stimulus money

This idea is brilliant! I’m currently following Dave Ramsey’s plan and have 1000 saved and paying off debt, but I definitely get nervous about having such a small emergency fund. Last year I started paying my car payment and my personal loan one month ahead of the due date and it has been so liberating!!!!

My pay varies as from month to month as well. So what I did was to track my pay for 6 months and treated the lowest pay check as if it was my "fixed" income to budget. The other option is to track your pay for 6 months and divide by 6 to get an average amount per month.

This is how we’ve always tried to live- with a month’s worth of expenses. It has been a lifesaver!

We were a month ahead for about a year and the lack of stress was amazing. My husband has on call pay so our budget is never the same. Being able to budget on the 1st using everything from last month was SO much easier. We had life happen and got off track but we are planning to use our tax refund to get us back ahead!

I realllyyyy love cash budgeting. Also, currently, we are in a cheaper apartment. That takes some adjustment because its not the best place to be. However, we are saving together for our next place. I saved 3 months of rent & then it will be my partner's turn to pay the next 3 months. I'm a frugal person, I buy things w/ intention. I pay ahead as much as I can. I paid a year of Scrib'd. I use mint mobile & paid a year on that. I buy 2 months of big bag puppy food at a time. I delete stuff "I think I need". Subscriptions, etc. It is not easy! It will be a challenge. But, the reward is so worth it. I dont eat out really at all, unless I plan for it. I pack a lunch every single night for work. I find cheap foods. I do stock on the foods I like & pull from that. Buying staple foods really helps bulk a meal or change a recipe. Example: Homemade chorizo pinto beans w/ rice, bread, eggs, etc. So many budget friendly meals. What helped was not impulse buying & replacing it with, "IF I want it, I can budget for it. It is not an emergency to have." So....having said that. It has simplified my life greatly. So thankful to learn tools from everyone. Thank you for all your tips & advice!

I know this video is old but I’m just starting my journey. I feel great knowing I’m starting exactly like you said, start an emergency fund first. I’m $250 into my $1200 emergency goal on my first check. Next will be savings challenges to pay off debt. I’m REALLY excited because without realizing it, I’m starting out on my extra check month!! I kept going over my budget thinking I did something wrong. I’ve planned all the way until June so far. When I got to June I was already paying for July bills!!! Lol 😂 I was like, “I’ve made a huge mistake somewhere! I can’t have an extra $500. ” Lol 😂. I feel REALLY bad not making a budget ALL THESE YEARS! I was winging it on my extra payday and spending crazy money. Not anymore. Thanks for this video.

Having a 18 month emergency fund provides great freedom, it can take time, but step by step is possible. I believe money should be kept simple Save some, spend some, invest some and give some with the individual working out what percentages work for them. . Keep up your great work Kristin and as always Blessings John

We are in the same situation also. Husband's income varies week to week & I have been trying to get a month ahead for a while also. Technically, I could technically just take a small lump from savings & just "start". But I really hate taking money from savings. Thanks for the video!

I thought the month ahead meant bills paid a month before they were due. I have been getting ahead, once I saved 1000 emergency fund. Thanks for explaining! Once I had a cushion, I put utilities on an auto payment. It took a while to trust the companies but have been happy 😊. One less dead line!

I can definitely see how it would be difficult to budget and plan if every check fluctuates by a few hundred dollars! I have a quota myself so my earnings fluctuate but my base pay remains the same which makes it easier to plan thankfully. One thing that helped me get ahead was taking on side jobs to earn extra money and I used that to build an emergency fund. I hope you're able to make this work soon, I think you're really close and on the right track!!

This was a awesome video. I get paid on the 1st and 16th of each month all my bills are due at the beginning of each month. My 16 check will kick off my one month ahead. I can’t wait 😊😊😊
