Hmong community hosts 'end the silence' workshop on domestic violence

Members of the Hmong community in St. Paul spoke out about domestic violence in front of a panel of experts saying cultural differences have allowed abuse in their community to get out of hand.

Hmong men are great individuals in their own ways. 99.9% of Hmong men truly love their wife and children and have great relationships with their wife. This event is actually very dumb and embarrassing because white men and black men kill, abuse, and divorce more women than any other race in America. Know that you are pointing fingers at your father, your brother, and everyone who has done nothing to you. Fix your own family problems Hmong has nothing to do with your dysfunctional relationships or family. Stop blaming "HMOOB" for your problems! As a Hmong and a son who witnessed my mom being beaten and sent to the hospital three times by my dad, this is an issue that has never been resolved.

I still remember my clan leader threatening my mom to drop the case against my dad and saw and heard the stuff my clan said to my mom at the time.

To this day, I've never been close to my clan anymore, and people can say im clanless, but I dont care about the Hmong clans system because ive seen the ugliestside to it, and I think it is disgusting.

Hmong culture, where weddings process are all about talks of a price agreement for selling and buying a wife.

The stubbornness of refusing to move on from it.

I understand that we should preserve our culture, and that's understandable to preserve it, but preserving it doesn't mean we have to practice it.
