I got the chance to go down to Tesla and test drive the brand new UK right hand drive Tesla Model Y Long Range. I'm actually an owner of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range so I thought it would be good to give you my initial impressions before the car is launched this year!

It needs a parcel shelf.
Thinking about the volume of the car it really should be noisier than the Model 3 as the rear suspension noise would not be attenuated. Anyone with a larger car and a removable parcel shelf can see this . The larger area also allows lower frequency sound to propagate through the cabin.

I’m glad you liked it, because we have the 19” wheel version on order. It’s to replace the VW camper we just sold, and intended for sleeping in for short 2 day or so trips out, and for carrying a bloody great heavy Cabanon tent and camping paraphernalia. The SR+ will be an incredibly overkill second car until our son and girlfriend take it on, and we agree that if you don’t need the space of the Y, the 3 is a wonderfully well sized and versatile, sporty car.

Finally test driving the Model Y on Thursday in Brum, although we have 2 on order for March delivery, they are double glazed on all 4 door windows, the Ryzen chip is fitted and some body parts have PPF fitted. Really enjoyed your review.

For me, the Y is the car I wanted the 3 to be as I’ve nearly always had an estate or hatchback all my driving life. Still to hear about the towbar option which I believe is a after purchase option from a Tesla service centre.

I test drove a Y yesterday (I've tested all the others too) and I was very impressed. I currently drive an Audi Q4 and it felt just as well built and even more spacious. I've ordered one in grey with white interior and can't wait. I just think the whole experience (driver/car/app unity) is miles ahead of the Audi even though that's still a good EV

Great comparison, thank you. Funnily enough I was there on the test yesterday and I found the car excellent overall. However the suspension is a little too firm on British roads (in my opinion), particularly at low speeds. I found it a little unsettled on the imperfections of our terrible B and A roads. Other than that slight rattle on the rear headrest fixed by lowering it. If they put air suspension or improved damping this car would be a no brainier.

I did a back to back test drive and I agree the model 3 feels a little sportier to drive, but I have 3 kids 11, 13, and 16, and when they were in the 3 they looked crammed together. When they were in the Y they were all a lot happier. So, I want a performance model 3 but I am going to get the performance Y instead for the larger back seat space.
