Having to sit still sounds like the most painful part

Got my first tattoo 2 weeks ago. Front left shoulder, not bad at all, a little tender down towards the armpit though. Getting my second in 3 weeks, a compass to celebrate 6 years being sober. Love the site, keep up the good work.

I personally think the healing process is worse than when you’re getting tattooed, not because of pain just the annoyance of having to constantly worry about hitting it on things, touching it, or getting it stuck to your blanket while sleeping ✌️

I have always explained it as a focused friction burn sensation that is on repeat, but a tad more mild as a result of it simply being an tattoo needle. While your skin is being punctured, it doesn’t feel like stabbing or cutting at all. I worried there would be a sharp sensation from the needle despite knowing otherwise but it was honestly just like getting a mild friction burn for two hours. The pain was durable once I got used to it. I started with a wrist/forearm tattoo. The wrist was the worst part but nothing compared to some of the sun burn or actual burns I’ve had. The procedure is more hot and irritating than anything. Good conversation with the artist (if they are inclined) always helps subvert attention from pain - or an audio book.

pain varies depending on style of tattoo as well.. traditional tattoos are generally more painful than realism tattoos due to the fact that traditional tattoos have solid, bold lines. They are also typically very saturated with color and require at least 2 machines/needle set-ups. A liner and a shader.
Realism tattoos can be made with mostly a shader and require thin lines, if any lines at all.

My mind is getting the best of me :( I feel like it won’t be as bad as I think but I’m still worrying. And I’m afraid I’m gonna make myself pass out from being so scared

I just got my first tattoo a few days ago, and it was an all single needle dotwork/linework tattoo with some fine-line detail as well. I sat for 6 hours, with a one-hour lunch break in the middle. The pain was very bearable until he began to do the fine-line detailing. That tiny needle genuinely felt like a red hot razor cutting into my skin. Then the first 10 minutes after lunch were hell. The rest of it was painful enough that I had to focus on relaxing my body and breathing through it, but nothing too tough to sit through.

The only thing that scares me about getting a tattoo is having to stay still and then the outcome of the tat and if it will heal right

I was born with a high pain tolerance.. So I think.. I hope I'll be okay.

Got 7 tattoos in just the span of two months. My tattoo artist commented I have high pain tolerance. It's our weekly session lol to have a tattoo, me and my partner. My latest is a polynesian half sleeve. Usually it takes 2 sessions. But I told my artist I can do it for just 1 session. To be honest it's the healing process that sucks. The itching, the pain after getting the tattoos. But all in all, getting a tattoo makes me happy.

The worst pain that you get from tattoos is that itching. You can't sleep, you can't do anything else than hope it goes away soon.😂

I honestly expected myself to flinch for the first stick since it was my first tattoo, but shockingly I didn’t, when the needle hit me I was just like “ oh, ok, not that bad” to me it felt like when I get blood drawn, just it keeps on going, so for me who gets blood drawn on a regular basis, it wasn’t that bad

I’m getting my first tat on my inner forearm this Friday and I’m nervous. This helped tremendously, it truly is all mental for sure.

Got my first one today on the right triceps. No color, small area of shading. When he drew the lines it really felt like a cat is slowly scratching down your arm. The shading felt more uncomfortable because its like scratching over and over again on a surface thats already "damaged". Just felt like a hot and annoying scratching. But nonetheless I want to motivate those who are afraid. I was really scared of passing out bc I have a history of low blood pressure and almost fainted once in a train for apperently no reason. Also I told some friends that I would get it and I was afraid of telling them that it wasnt finished bc I fainted.... My heart really raced when he turnt on the machine, the sound got closer and he started to tattoo... but it was all good!
Have a fat and carbohydrate heavy meal upfront, be hydrated (I chugged like 1.5l of water in the 90 minutes before) and be well rested. Also had a snickers and orange juice haha... Trust me, even when your heart rate hits 150 in the drive to the shop, you most certainly wont pass out. Its just excitement and that's good! Be happy to have something of meaning on your body forever.
Cheers.

I had my first tattoo done on my thigh a few days ago. Having a history of depression I have regrettably self harmed in the past so I went in thinking if it hurts less than a knife I’m good. And it honestly wasn’t bad at all. I was there 7 hours for the first session. The last hour was rough I’m not gonna lie but that was because it had been 6 hours already and it is quite a detailed anime tattoo with lots of colour. Just go into your tattoo session with an open mind, expect there to be pain, but it isn’t as bad as you think it will be. I have high anxiety and I was able to cope with the pain. Try and find a good artist who will best suit your tattoo type.
