I remember, when I was a little kid watching this for the first time, wincing so hard when Nemo got shot and then just staring there in stunned disbelief. At the time he was practically a hero of mine (it was years before I came to see him as the more anti-heroic character he truly is)–I couldn't believe I was about to watch him die.

Even in the face of death when Captain Nemo got shot the dignity he and his crew displayed No panic. Captain Nemo refused to allow his First Mate to pilot the Nautilus. No medical officer on board to remove the bullet. The Submarine Base of Vulcania Destroyed and The Submarine Nautilus scuttled to prevent her secrets from being misused.

Love this movie! But I always felt that Nemo was the hero, not the villain!

Nemo was doing good and taking cover like a seasoned veteran. Then he decided to stand up and take a casual stroll down the steps. That's when they got him.

Nemo is an admirable example of a true anti-hero, and no one could have done it better than James Mason.

That look when he's at the wheel: That's the look when you're driving home, you need to go to the restroom really bad and you've gotta hold it for a few more minutes.

It's James Mason, and the fact that he conceals his injury and keep commanding is inherently heroic no matter what else he may have done.

for a 1954 film its not bad since in that time television was very money consuming so having 2 television sets for people means your rich good film.
