The Vatican on Thursday (29 March) rebuked a well-known Italian journalist quoted Pope Francis as saying that "hell does not exist." According to an article on La Repubblica, when journalist Eugenio Scalfari, a 93-year-old atheist, asked where "bad souls" go and where they are punished, the pope reportedly said the souls of sinners simply "disappear" after death and were not subject to an eternity of punishment. The Vatican said the pope did not grant him an interview and the article "was the fruit of his reconstruction" not a "faithful transcription of the Holy Father's words".
