The Canvas Tuner Has A Major Issue

Let's talk a little about the Canvas Tuner from Walrus Audio. It is a great tuner pedal but there's also one major issue with that thing...

After reading some of the comments I get the impression that either the industry did a pretty good job in brainwashing or many of you guys don't have any clue what daisy chain technically means. Daisychaining is not a bad thing in general - maybe I should do a follow up video and explain some basic stuff. And please do me a favor and watch the video to the end before posting a comment - it could help to understand 🙏🎸

Totally fine if our tuner isn't your cup of tea! However, using a pedal in a way the manual says not to use it then complaining that it doesn't do what you want it to do when its not being used correctly is an odd way to critique it though.

I remember when I bought my first properly isolated power supply. It was a second hand Walrus Audio Phoenix. Fixed so many issues on my pedalboard. Evolving is hard, but you'll figure it out.

My understanding from videos I've watched of Vertex Effects is that it's not a good idea to have digital and analogue pedals on the same power, as we as isolating all modulation pedals to their own output too because they can create some noise. As somebody else said though, Walrus Audio does make it clear in their manuals to power this with an isolated power source and not to daisy chain it. You're right though that it would be nice for an updated version to allow for daisy chaining or a power out.

I would call it a limitation but not a major issue, in any case a tuner needing 300ma (as per spec) is quite unusual to begin with,

getting noise from daisy chaining a high current draw pedal when daisy chaining with others is almost to be expected unfortunately,
although unheard of usually from a tuner pedal

it has some fun features (orientation / wallpaper) but if that's what you're buying the pedal for, then you need to consider proper power options

The other major problem with this tuner is that it does not make a strong black coffee. I know I’m using the pedal incorrectly but I just thought it would because I want it too. It also isn’t telling me the winning lottery numbers…Will this feature in a future firmware update ???

Users exist who only have outdated power supplies, but pedal boards without tuners are rarely seen.
Let's say I were a young guitar kid with only non-isolated power supplies. If noise ended up on my analog pedals, I would regret not watching this video beforehand. Surely, I would lament why nobody had informed me.
Considering the various environments, I also believe it's best for tuners to be prepared for such situations. Of course, I understand both the perspective of the video and everyone else's arguments.

Personally I see this tuner as a bit pointless for my purposes but I don’t think this is a good criticism. If you haven’t yet I suggest you try using a daisy chain 1spot on a couple strymon pedals and you’ll see a similar thing happen. The problem here is you’re trying to “game the system” on a device that needs all the notated power it demands. This is more user error and not a Walrus audio problem. It’s a reasonable complain that it doesn’t have a power out option but not that you cant draw current away from the pedal. Analog pedals have less issue with daisy chaining where as modern digital stuff doesn’t do well with it. A good follow up video would he recommending a good power supply for the budget player. I use a Walrus Phoenix and it’s incredible. It’s 250 dollars but fixes so many problems. And I can power my CE-1 on it too. Check that thing out.

I gave up daisy chaining years ago There are too many pedals- including older fuzzes and the like, not just digital ones, that don’t like them. Putting scratch pedalboards together so often meant I could never rely on them working. Useful video all the same though.

I daisy chain my polytune and get zero noise from it. Surprising that a company who specializes in power supplies couldn't get this right.

I just bought a Boss TU-3. Highly accurate, can take a 9V battery, no digital noise, you can daisy-chain the power, and NO GIMMICKS. It just works, which is what you want on stage.

Thanks! Now I figured out why my tuner was noisy! 😅

I like Walrus Audio and I own many of their pedals. The manuals make it very clear to use a separate power supply for each pedal. I just assumed that was to ensure maximum performance from the pedal. If other pedal manufacturers recommend using separate power for each of their pedals, maybe it’s just an industry standard. The canvas tuner seems cool, but maybe too gimmicky for it’s real purpose: to give the musician accurate tuning on stage or studio. A tuner pedal that has the potential to get noisy is a risk to the whole board. I love Walrus Audio, but if you use the Canvas Tuner just be careful how it’s used in your rig. Rock on, Walrus!👍

*In addition, the stomp button on the CANVUS really sucks! It dos not have any touch resistance, when you press on it and it has a habit on not working when you press it. THEY WILL USE EXCUSESS LIKE, they can not fit XYZ in the unit, as an excuse to not put a better switch and power out capabilities. They have a few issues, if they work through them, they will offer the best TUNER PEDAL on the market.*

Despite the fact they could’ve avoided this issue, everything these days is about cutting cost. The fact that the industry standard has been LONG past daisy chaining would inform why they didn’t waste time and money on that detail, despite how “easy” it could’ve been. Not about easy… it’s about money. Power supply’s with isolated jacks have been a must since the late 90s/early 00s. Why are we daisy chaining? I had issues every single time I tried daisy chaining pedals, so I ended that stupid nonsense really quick early on.

Pedals dumping clock noise on ground has been an issue for what... 30 years? Even that famous Small Stone did it and yes, it's frigging annoying. For good measures I isolate everything, except maybe analog boosters, overdrives, wah, ...

I don’t see why anyone would even want to daisy chain pedals off a tuner…sounds like you’d be asking for potential noise issues by doing so. Walrus audio designs pedals that require a high amount of current, so they recommend isolated power for their pedals. Same reason you don’t see any of their pedals with a 9v battery option.

For a pedal tuner, the turbo tuner is the best, it’s is the fastest, it has no goofy delay to bypass, unlike Peterson, you want the best ? Buy a turbo tuner. Funny thing is most have never even heard of sonic research.

I honestly don't understand all the daisy chain comments.

Are people so used to poorly designed digital pedals (whether due to penny pinching, lack of testing, lack of oversight or otherwise) that they assume that noise is unavoidable if daisy chained?

I design and build my own pedals for my personal use, both analog and digital ( using a variety of parts eg. Rpi, pi zero 2 w, esp32 & other mcus) with some forethought, careful design and regular testing and revisions these issues can nearly always be eliminated .
