If the trees aren't thick enough or you just want a wider bed, you could cut a couple of sticks that are 2-3 inch thick by however wide you want the bed. Notch the ends of the sticks and place them between the ropes above the head and below the foot of the weaving. That would provide the extra space by holding the ropes apart. It might compromise the grip the rope has on the trees, so you might want to make an extra wrap on each trunk. You wouldn't want to go too wide with it though. I suspect that the wider it is, the less stable it would be. I'll definitely be trying this out sometime this summer.

I'm thinking about how you could do this bed with fabric (ripstop nylon) instead of rope, so that it's more comfortable. Any ideas? :)
