I’d consider myself lucky for not fitting within the current teenager girl demographic, but not because “oh I see past the marketing and am so much smarter”— I know that if I had grown up being a kid who was interested in makeup, skincare, and other popular pre-teen products, I probably would’ve followed these trends too. It was merely a coincidence that I wasn’t considered a “girly girl” when I was younger, not because I was “self-aware”, but because I genuinely didn’t understand what the interest was about.

Now that I’m getting older I am indeed dipping into a bit of makeup and outfits that I like, but I’m aware that what I like now *is* based on what I see around me. And that’s totally fine as long as that doesn’t start to devolve into deeper-rooted wants to fit in.
