When I listen to these songs, I suddenly think of the sadness and longing of the phantom for Christine when he has to be away from her.

She stood there, her eyes lingering behind the curtain as she watched the beautiful Christine Daaé sing her heart out to the new managers. She was shy at first, the girl noted, her lips trembling with every syllable of the Jewel Song. Faust was a rather odd choice for an opera this late into the spring, but it seemed that the new managers were desperate to have it done. Of course, there was always the hidden rumor that the Opera Ghost had influenced the managers' decisions. What a funny name: the Opera Ghost. The little ballet rat had heard the title more than once, especially from little Jameson who cried day and night about the creature from their stories. But that was all the being was, simply a story; or at least that is what the little ballet rat believed. However, it was quite intriguing to see their own Christine sing such a beautiful song with such glossy eyes. Her blond hair was such an envy of the other ballet girls. Most had muted browns, some dirty blonds, Jameson was a redhead, so she did receive some attention, but Christine was special. She would always have suitors flock to her after a show, even if she had done nothing but stand and smile. Everyone loved her, and they had reason to. She was perfect. Always kind, always grateful, always gentle.

Christine Daaé was truly a specimen to behold, and the ballet rats were nothing more than sewer creatures compared to her elegance. The girl behind the curtain sighed softly, knowing that those thoughts would bring her nothing but grief. Everyone was important, even the ballet rats who were pushed to the sidelines. Without them, who would dance to the songs? Who would bring entertainment and beauty other than song? They would. They had to. Sure, they were paid good enough to do it, so why should she complain?

As the ending notes of the aria came to a close, the girl turned away from the curtain and began to walk off. She was wearing a chemise dress, it fit her figure quite well and managed to make her look a bit slimer than she already was. Yes, Christine Daaé's voice was beautiful, but the little rat liked to think that she had a rather pretty voice as well. It was not as high pitched as Christine's, not as sweet, but it was full of warmth, of longing, of hope. To her, Christine's voice was that of a fresh spring, and her song was of an oncoming winter.

She kept walking, the edges of the dress swishing against the ground. She was still in her makeup from rehearsal, and her hair was still done in pins. It was quite heavy, and she wished more than anything to escape from the burden that the costumers had put upon her. Her quiet footsteps made gentle taps against the wooden floor as she walked further and further away from the stage and deeper into the bowls of the opera house. Some found it terrifying, and others joked of being forever lost in the rafters and walls, but the little ballet rat did not mind. The opera house did not frighten her, in fact, it excited her and made her curiosity grow. Who knew how many passages and rooms the opera house held? What if there were areas that were undiscovered? How wonderful would that be?

Her cheerful countenance faded away slowly as she thought of the opera house and its grandeur. Would she ever be as grand as something like this? Ever as grand as Miss Daaé who could not only charm men with her voice, but with her looks as well? Would she ever be able to pay off her debt to the opera house? The place that took her in and raised her to be a dancer since young. Surely one day... she was the best dancer out of all of them. Madame Giry had said so herself! But thoughts still plagued her... thoughts of being trapped in the same routine every day. Such ideas brought flushed tears to her eyes, the stress and unbridled resentment in her heart finally being released. Was she not owed a shred of thanks? A simple look? A simple smile? She had been her longer than Christine, and yet the girl with the pristine golden hair always received praise - whether it be from the Madame, the costumers, or the managers... she was the apple of everyone's eye. And the other girls? Her and the ballet rats included. They were nothing. The opera house could always hire more or replace them. They were just decorations to be thrown away when they lost their shine. Such thoughts continued to plague her until she opened her mouth and sang a soft melody under her breath. No one would care here, right? Not deep within the opera house. No one would hear. Singing was a way to lament about her own sorrows, and she had the perfect song to do so with.

"Lascia ch'io pianga... mia cruda sorte... e che sospiri la libertà... e che sospiri... e che sospiri la libertà..."

"*Why do you sing of wanting freedom?*"

The voice startled her immediately, shutting her mouth and causing her to turn with wide eyes. Who was there? And such a voice... it rumbled and burned right through her soul. It was warm, and cold at the same time... like a hot knife rubbing against one's skin. She gazed around in the darkness, but could not make out any face, nor figure. Perhaps it had just been her imagination? Who would be this deep in the opera anyway during the performance of the beautiful Christine? She shrugged it off before continuing, keeping silent and wrapping her arms lightly against herself. The soft fabric of her gown bringing some comfort.

"*It is quite rude to ignore a question someone has asked of you.*"

She definitely did not imagine that. She twirled around again, frightened suddenly. Her eyes searched once more, and just as she went to open her mouth to question the voice, or at least to see if one of the catwalk workers was playing a game with her, her mouth was covered by a gloved hand. The glove was worn and smelt of rough leather. However, underneath that, an earthy scent of death stung her nostrils. Her eyes widened and she tried to fight, but another hand gripped the edge of her waist and yanked her back into the shadows.
