Why Capitalism is Killing Us (And The Planet)

In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at why capitalism is killing us (and the planet) by causing climate change. Specifically, I look at how capitalism's multinationals like ExxonMobil and BP are responsible for increased emissions and ultimately the climate crisis we are living through today. Capitalism's growth-at-all-costs paradigm runs counter to the material realities of the Earth we live on. In addition to causing climate change, capitalists have found insidious ways to profit off of and engrain free market, neoliberal ideas into the global economy in the wake of climate change-fueled disasters. This is called disaster capitalism and will only get worse as the climate crisis causes more and more chaos. Flying in the face of this capitalist destruction are countless revolutionary movements and ideas that are working to dismantle the profit and growth economy and lift up the people instead. Eco-socialism moving into communism, degrowth, buen vivir, and food sovereignty are just a few philosophical tactics that are being championed by the masses as a means of countering the destructive tendencies of capitalism.

Can we stop using and normalizing the word "lobbying" and call it what it is? They are BRIBING

I’ve always thought it was insane that a person or a small group of people can own a large chunk of natural resources and do with it whatever they please for their own personal gain.

"and I'm scared" this right here is exactly the feeling. Behind all the anger, all the verbal attacks and criticisms towards this system is a legitimate fear that if we don't do something, we really aren't going to make it. It's a existential fear of knowing that we are itching towards our impending death and yet no one around seems to care...

In Capitalism, Government policy and businesses are highly dependent on "CONSUMER SPENDING." If people don't spend, companies will fail, and the capitalist structure will fall apart. Therefore, the capitalists and their government will do anything to boost the people's spending. Although they may spend a lot on marketing to persuade people to buy, businesses and the government do not have the power to force people to buy stuff. That day will come.

I immigrated from Texas after 40 years and went back to the central European homelands of my ancestors. I have full and inexpensive healthcare, and I am never going back. I have also walked everywhere for the last nine months, as my city is very walkable. For those inclined and able, give something similar a try. I doubt you will regret it.

I deeply respect your passion for these projects. It brings a lot into perspective things that I am aware of individually, but are so beautifully strung together here to show everything pulling on everything else.

Man your videos are so important. There's just nobody out there making topic specific videos that highlight the conversations we need to be having. Great work Charlie!

Corporations and the "free market" were given a chance a couple decades back to face the climate challenge, and they failed. People need to understand that the possibility of "gradual change" is long gone, is is physically impossible at this point, the only alternative left is radical and rapid change, however unstable it is which you can thank large corporations for ensuring.

That was food for thought. I'm ready. The path forward: it seems to me we need to form community mutual aid groups and displace as many as possible of the corporate-centered structures as possible. We need to consciously move forward with the planet and community as the center in all our decision-making.

Thank you for making this. It’s hard for people to understand why this is serious. It always helps having so much information delivered so cleanly through an easy to watch video!
