I have seen pictures of an actual Penobscot with a different arrangement for the strings. Instead of attaching the secondary strings directly to the tip (which seems like it would have a lot of stacking problems), the strings were attached near the handle and layed into a grove at the tips of the secondary bow. Instead of pulling the tips back, it would compress them almost like a very simple pulley. It worked quite well. I gifted it to a Migmaw elder who was teaching a course that my wife was taking.

I didn't know this was an actual bow. I thought it was just a product of fantasy games and movies.
Interesting video, great job!

I am in Penobscot, Native American I’ve heard it described that. The reason for the style of bow is due to lower quality woods available in this region of the north east, and by building this bow you are able to obtain more power through lower quality woods the truth, being, we are a river people. We invented the canoe. We hunt fish travel and live in canoes, so it comes down to making a shorter more compact bow that can be fired from a sitting position in a canoe. And being able to boost the power of the short bow to make it much more affective, where we have large game on the rivers, like moose and white tail

That was an excellent video brother! Awesome bow builds! You're right, they are much harder to make as I'm in the process of making a penobscot bow from two Mollegabet bows I'm finishing up ... Hoping to connect them together by this weekend and see how the tiller is with them combined before I permanently put them together with epoxy! Need to make the shirt bow strings as well.
Thanks and God bless you. The penobscot bow and Mollegabet bows are my favorites. So having one that's two Mollegabet bows should be really cool if I can make it work. You and the guy from RowinBows are the best. Your three bow version hands down is the best! That weapon looks SICK!!! 💪🎯🏹

I have fallen in love with mine which is two mollegabet bows that I epoxied together for good. I was able to finally shoot it yesterday for the first time at almost full draw although my shoulder was killing me and could only take about 20 shots then my shoulder pain was too bad to continue. I should be able to put a video up soon of me shooting it in a couple of days after the rain stops. We are getting a couple of rainy days but should clear up by Wednesday.
Your right, it took me a good while to make my penobscot bow, and I'm still finding myself fine tuning the short strings to the smaller bow. But it does have a smooth mechanical advantage making it easier to draw back. Mine is 44lbs at it's heaviest, and it feels like a 35lb pull, because I have 40 & 45lb bows that I can't come close to pulling back with my shoulder injury, but like I said, I am only about an inch or two from full draw with my Penobscot bow.
The cool thing about having one, is that you know that not many people world wide even own one or even know what it is!

Great video a quick question
for a lower quality wood what would be more recommended a penobscot or a cable backed bow?

so, just so i understand, what i basically need is two bows, basically back to back... one a lot less powerful and probably a lot smaller than the other.
but more notably they have to be back to back, ?

or are you basically stacking an unstrung recurve bow on the back of another bow?

i wanna see if i can make a hackneyed one from some cheap fibreglass bows i already own

I liked your video very much. When you say inferior bow woods can be used, I am not so sure. At least in compression they must be very good, because the main bow will be compressed even more. I think their main benefit is in tunability (within limits) and a better initial acceleration of heavier hunting/war arrows. I really think you crafted some very nice bows there!!! Hope to see a MikMaq soon!

I read a article that says they are found dating back to the 1500s an even older

Is there a proper way to grip a flat handle bow compared to gripping a pistol grip recurve ?

Find alot of nock left arrow impacts since starting to use board bows

Oooof, that first 5 seconds of watching him use the hatchet near the concrete. Chills. I'd get a wood stump or bench to place the material on before chopping away.

Well said.
These penobscot bows seem fascinating, but it seems more like a technique to use if you dont have the materials to make a decent bow.
If you have the materials .... make ONE good bow... rather than a multifaceted compound Frankenstein bow.
Penobscot seems like a fix or mod, rather than an ideal design.
Great video mate.

What happens if you use Mongolian compound construction with this design would it have any advantage?
