ESA Euronews: The Mars detectives

Europe's off to Mars. Again. We have sent robots to fly over Mars, crawl over Mars and soon to dig down into Mars - searching for signs that once, perhaps deep in the past, this planet may have been home to life. It might be an obvious choice, but still a puzzle, and one that we're only just beginning to piece together. And finding evidence of life will require the skill of the finest detectives.

This is a mystery that Europe's ExoMars mission is ready to solve. In 2016 it will have a satellite in orbit around Mars, designed to test for methane, and by 2018 this rover will be rolling around the Red Planet. The mission will be the first to set out with the direct intention of finding signs of life, now, and in the past.

ESA is doing great in space. Glad to see it.

What I think should be a priority is to drill down with an environmental chamber to a depth protected from radiation. Open scoop flaps on the chamber at depth to collect sample. Add some pressure, water, light and then monitor. If there is life it is underground. Test for it.. It is a logical step.

Best bet to find life is to land a rover directly on to the face on mars or next to the glass tubes and explore the 'in your face' mysteries. This is the kind of mission that would interest the world.

Cool video! Its awesome to see that not only NASA can make good science videos :D

Strange to think that the 2016 entry-descent demonstrator won't even carry the simplest of cameras to show us the landing site. Oh well.

Awesome! NASA and the ESA should join together to send a probe to Europa or Titan.

I like the idea, but landing would be a bitch. The Mars atmosphere is so thin it would be difficult the have enough lift at low speeds.

inevitably? After 10 years on mars, the Martian Rover oppurtunity is still roving around like no problem ;)

Hey guys could one of you send me a few untouched raw images of the mars surface? I sure would appreciate it! Everything from NASA is out of focus...:(
