Excel Cumulative Sum Formula

There are a couple of easy ways to add a running total to a range of data in your spreadsheet.

The SUM formula can be used in the first row, too. No need for a special formula there. I.e., use '=SUM(B$4:B4)'. This allows the data to be sorted on any column without breaking the Cumulative Sales result.

what if i created a similar table but with another column that decreases the total, for example a cash flow table. Sales will increase the total value but expenses will decrease the accumulating total. CAn you help me? thanks

Why is there no function to just say "add up everything in column C"? All I want is one cell off to the side that quickly shows me what I have spent on a project as new bills get added in the expense column. This technique works just fine as long as I have a fixed list of expenses. But if the list grows I have to remember to go back and manually change the range so it sums the new values.
