These remasters sound like having new Queen songs all over again.

Yes, these 2011 remasters are top notch. They sound great on a good sound system. Turn'em up loud!

I agree that nothing can be done about the recorded sound - but the dead "studio" sound is the fault of the mix - there was a brief fashion for this kind of drum sound, probably due to the influence of Ziggy Stardust (also recorded at Trident). I think this remaster is a tragically wasted opportunity, and I am sure Roger Taylor would agree. By the way, I have been in that same drum booth at Trident (before the studio closed) and for fun played "Seven Seas of Rhye" on the in house Trident piano.

It's not the mix, but how Roy Thomas Baker recorded them. Compare this to Mack's drum sound on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Remastering the original sound won't do much to change or improve what wasn't there to begin with (powerful drums) in the recording. Since the drums were recorded softly in 1973, that's how they'll sound on the master forever. The only way to create a new drum sound would be to re-record them or mix in computerized drums or something like that.

The main weakness of the original Trident Studios mix was that the drum sound did not do justice to Roger Taylor's amazing kit. Sadly this remix has the same flaw - the drum sound is too thin. How on earth was this alowed to happen?
