I remember seeing this as a kid. Love it. A classic in my opinion.

4:56 I love this vending machine gag, with the ridiculous sign going over all the ways one can put 20 cents into the machine. Gets such a huge laugh out of me & I have no idea why.

I usually appreciated WBs re-use of animation; especially on gag ends - like Elmer & telephone poll. It would make me think “no matter what they do, the end result is the same”. The re-use of the crowds is a no brainer. If that frees up resources to further other scenes, I’m all for it.

3:15- William Boyd had been very successful with his series of "Hopalong Cassidy" movies in the 1930's and '40s, eventually leasing them to television during this period- and became a star to a new generation of kids watching them on local stations and NBC (1949-'51), as well as a radio show of Hoppy's further adventures.

A nice cartoon that I grew up watching on television quite frequently. It is a remake of a 1944 short that Freeleng made with Bugs and Elmer, but without reusing any of the animation from that one (scenes from that one would show up later in a cheater cartoon).

Great job, guys! Maybe not the greatest title- but it did have me laughing as a kid! Everything else about the cartoon I love. Folks, if you haven't seen this one all the way through, do yourself a favor and see it!

12:54 I just noticed that for the people running back into the theater, they just flipped the cels backwards. You can see the paint going over the outlines. 😂
Also, yeah, I was thinking the same thing you guys were thinking. For someone who claimed to not like using Elmer, Freleng sure utilized him well during this period.

This should had been the first cartoon of 1949 and also this short is really good with it's great gags and I liked this scene where bugs and elmer were chasing each other throughout the theater.

Sid Farren (mentioned in that poster with Pete Burness) was an assistant animator in Freleng's unit. Interesting that Pete's name is on the poster, yet he didn't animate on this cartoon..

Maybe he got it from Miwitawy Suhpwus, an off-brand* Elmer'd love to buy stuff from.

*(not really)

3:25- Now, you're probably wondering *WHY* "Anthony Adverse" is on the movie marquee? Even though the film was originally released in August 1936, it was re-released to theaters in December 1947- at the time this cartoon was produced.

Compared to Wise Quackers his 1st short of 1949, this was an better effort by Friz. He does Elmer better here then that short as well Though 1949 does get better later on but this is definitely better short by Friz then the one he did with Daffy and Elmer. 8 out of 10.

7:55- Apparently, by this point in time, the movie industry not only acknowledged the existence of human-looking rabbits {wearing four fingered white gloves}, they realized they also went to the paid *cash* to see them. So, a special rate was established by theater owners to accommodate rabbits like Bugs. Believe me, those theaters needed all the money they could get from movie patrons, as television had begun to cut into weekly movie attendance by early 1949.

I wonder about the Marron Insurance sign. is it a reference to a staff that did these cartoon?

There were candy vending machines, not usually in theaters though. What I always thought was funny as a kid (as late as the early 1970's), how much the theater was like church. You had the movie palaces, and right down the street you had this grand church. Men did not wear hats in church (there is a scripture about that), but women were required to. That chapeau joke, some women would wear these gigantic hats and you couldn't see around them. If were an usher . . . if the patron wasn't appropriate . . . out, you went! The doorman and his uniform! That really is an old joke. How often do you see a uniformed doorman anymore! I was a theater usher. I remember when we were serious about honor and symbolic submission. It wasn't just church; it was kind of the norm at least in larger cities. The beauty of this cartoon is the joke this kind of stuff really could be. The thing with me, I loved atmospheric movie palaces and huge church buildings. I liked some of the social rules as long as you didn't abuse them or use them as "I'm better than you!" There was a laughable nobility to it, if you didn't take it too seriously.

I find this one kind of ugly in places, It's one I struggle to remember.Friz has much better coming. I do laugh at bugs walking through the crowd and using the ladies head for support
