The reason the rubber turned into plastic is because the toluene and benzene in the lighter fluid have dissolved the ester bonds in the rubber (ester bonds make rubber strechey and bendable ) therefore plasticising the rubber.

Could you leave things in hydrogen peroxide, I think it would be Interesting.

Edit: someone else added that you need to either keep it out of the sunlight, or change the hydrogen peroxide occasionally, so that it doesn’t just turn to water (the peroxide will chemically react to the sunlight)./ also try to get some highly concentrated stuff from a chemicals manufacturer, because store bought is weak.
