In lesson #1 of the Smart Space: Geometry video series, John Urschel,
Ph.D. student at MIT, will introduce you to rigid transformations.
This lesson will:
• Give the definition of “rigid transformation”
• Look at examples
• Show how to preserve angles
• Discuss natural rigid transformations
---
John Urschel is a fifth-year Ph.D. student at MIT, studying applied mathematics. His research is focused on numerical analysis, graph theory, and data science/machine learning. Previously, he played as an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He recently co-published a memoir, “Mind and Matter: A Life in Math and Football,” which tells the story of how he’s balanced the messy, physically punishing world of football, with the elegant, cerebral field of mathematics.
