Sanctions are having an effect that is clear but it is not the first time sanctions have been applied to a country . other examples include Iran and Japan . With sanctions we are trying to alter a countries decision making ! In the two cases i have given Iran it has not had much of an effect but in Japan it had the opposite effect . Before Pearl Harbour America applied sanctions on Japan cut off its supply of oil . At that time Japan had annexed Manchuria and was pursuing war in China . Japan instead of coming to the negotiation table chose to invade countries to its south in order to get those raw materials as its back was to the wall because of biting sanctions . Sanctions work but they can backfire, Putin might decide that he is backed into a corner an d like a wild animal lash out or it could spark a wider war . Something we need to think about !!
