HTC Butterfly S Unboxing & Hands-On!

Aaron unboxes and gets a first look at the HTC Butterfly S, the Taiwanese cousin of the HTC One smartphone. Resembling the HTC DROID DNA (and of course, the original HTC Butterfly), the Butterfly S packs a 1.9 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, 5-inch 1080p HD SuperLCD3 display, 4-ultrapixel camera with 1080p HD recording, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, a giant 3,200 mAh battery, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5. It's available for purchase through Negri Electronics, and while it loses the metal exterior, it brings some fantastic improvements over the HTC One.

I'm just going to admit it, Aaron's voice makes me relax. It's not like some weird bromace nonsense, it's just my love of cellphones goes back years now, and through all those years, Aaron and his video reviews have played a big part in that. <3

Went back to using it briefly over the summer as my Sony Xperia Z5 broke. Surprised how well the battery held up as I was getting 3-4 hours screen on time over 12 hours. On my Z5 I was lucky to even break 2.5 hours SOT. The Butterfly s also had far better thermals and only got a bit warm under heavy gaming. Sadly the GPU and SoC have really shown its age. I get quite a bit of lag when opening apps (although this might be fixed with a factory reset) and the Snapdragon 600 can't support 1080p 60fps playback on YouTube. I remember when they first rolled out 60fps support on YouTube and I noticed the phone only had a 720p 60fps option.Then after a few more updates they brought back 1080p but only in 30fps and same with 720p. The video quality was noticeably worse since the videos were using another codec. I read that people with SD600 got Twitch 1080p/60fps to work but that was probably due to a different compression or codec. I had some 60fps 1080p h264 videos I loaded onto the phone and they struggled to play with the stock players, although I recall one of the third-party apps could play smoothly but with some odd artifacts. The camera has held up very poorly as well although it is much faster than the Z5.

It's a decent device. You should mention there is no lte support for the butterfly s in the state's.
Also just buy a DNA no it doesn't have boom sound but it does have everything else and a better camera.

A great phone overall but the headphone jack is terrible. First of all it's covered in paint which wears out gradually. After long use, certain headphone plugs will insert too deep and cause a buzzing sound and cut-off on the left channel. I did get it fixed the first time around and it worked well for a few months but it is sensitive to straining (such as your cord being caught on something) and eventually the same problem returned (mainly because I accidentally dropped the phone while listening to music, soft carpet didn't prevent it). My One X+ headphone jack does get loose but it didn't get damaged so easily.

I agree. Though if I was to get my hands on a Butterfly S, I'd try to go for a matte finish one. Shiny isn't really my thing, but hey. Everyone to their own.
