CICS or any other online interactive programming is inherently harder and more complicated that a batch system as there are many more things to consider as resources are shared an more complex.

The old adage was take your best batch programmers and train them in online. If you were a poor batch programmer you will be even worse in the online world.

That being said there has always been a shortage of decent online programmers. Too get around that shortage many third party online development tools have come market. Vendor products like Telon, Pacbase, Progeny hide the complexity of Mapping, Error Handling, Data Access, Program Flow to name just a few aspects. While it does not hurt to know the fundamentals of CICS or IMS many people will become knowledgeable in these vendor packages and write online systems without ever knowing detailed CICS knowledge.
