Teaching My Friend To Snowboard - Day 3 - Linking Turns

My Top Gear Picks

In this video I'm teaching my friend how to snowboard and how to start linking his snowboard turns together. This is Chris's second day snowboarding and he has so far learned how to skate, get off the chairlift, heel slide, toe slide and do a single snowboard turn. Today the goal is to get Chris linking his snowboard turn so he can turn down the entire run in control. If you have any beginner snowboard questions you can leave them in the comments section. Thanks for watching!

Thanks! My family of 4 are planning to take up snowboarding in the 2022-23 season and the beginner videos are great. If I can offer one suggestion it would be to put the videos on your playlists in logical order for binge watching.

The 3 tips that helped me the most as a beginner:
1. point your front arm in the direction you want to go (this keeps your shoulders stacked over your knees, giving you much better control and smoother turns)
2. put more weight on your front leg than you think you should, especially when initiating a turn (this keeps you from spinning out and falling on your butt)
3. go as fast as you can while still feeling somewhat in control (this helps you to make wider, cleaner turns, and it makes you less likely to catch an edge)

One of my biggest tips when helping beginners is to stop on the hill and practice holding your heel edge in a stop and pressing each foot down independently. Kind of like a gas pedal on each foot. If you push down on the left foot, you'll go left, same for the right. Flip around and face uphill on the toe edge and try that with the heels. Having a park board with lots of flex helps understand how the torsion of the board dictates direction.

As a new snowboarder my greatest obstacle is getting over my fear of speed. :(

I didn’t get any lessons or a guide my dad just threw me on the hill and I just fell until I caught on lol

The toughest part of learning for beginners is the speed. They always think they’re going a lot faster than they are. Your friend skis so he doesn’t have that problem. That run you’re teaching him on is too mellow. He can get off the chairlift which means he can do tougher runs. He needs help from the mountain to link turns.

I learned from you too. Watching your videos for 4 years now and I can say you have helped me from day 1. Love from Kosovo!

Currently learning how to snowboard since falling in love with the backcountry. The thing I'm overcoming is not being intimidated by the hill.

I remember being told to hold my arms out and point your front arm the direction you want to go. Must have been good advice because I caught on the first day, that was 20 years ago.

Thank you, dude! Your tips helped snowboard on my very first day! Within 2-3 hours I was linking turns and picking up quite a lot of speed! Of course I also had some mean falls... Lol. But your explanations of the basics helped me have a very clear idea of what to do and how to start. You saved me a couple of days of struggling and falling which would probably get in the way of me enjoying snowboarding. Now, I've just transitioned from ski to snowboard inn one day thanks to you!! Cheers!!!

Great videos! I Love how you break the skills down. The lessons I’ve had were rushed and scary. I will definitely be studying these videos before I head out again. I need you as my teacher. Your calm energy will chill me out!

Starting out I just got out on the slopes and fell HARD for about half a day before I really caught on. No training for me whatsoever. Now i'm hitting jumps and doing 180s and 360s pretty comfortably! It really is an easy sport to get a hang of once the basics are down. It also helps having some experience with wakeboarding and surfing.

That snow is great. First time I tried snowboarding today.
Early morning snow was hard as a rock. Kept on catching the edge when going from the toe side position to straight for the J turn.
I'll try again soon but in the afternoon instead. Hopefully snow is better.

The value of having a lesson with a patient instructor.

What you said about time off is absolutely correct. In fact more important than a break is sleep. Your body naturally runs through and solidifies muscle memory in your sleep. So consistent practice followed by good nights sleep will yield better muscle memory and faster results!
