Epic Sides! -- Side 2 - Tattoo You - Rolling Stones (1981)

1981’s Tattoo You was not your typical album - especially regarding the creation and recording of the final product. It was very much an “archival dig” with a finished product that belies it’s mixed origins. Side 2 could be the best side of the music on ANY Rolling Stones album. Here’s my take…

Heaven is one of my favorite songs by the Stones. I love this record. I remember when I was 5 years old my Mom and Dad went to see them on this tour in Syracuse, NY and I stayed home with a babysitter. Damn, I wish I saw that your with them. My parents are huge Stones fans. They named me after Brian Jones. Hahaha… True story!!

You are so right Tim, I love side two, so under appreciated. Love this history behind the songs and how they updated them. I remember walking in the record store in ‘81 and they were playing this album and Hang Fire was playing and I had to buy it. Side two has a very disco, funky sound that was awesome. My wife and I do ballroom dancing and we did a rumba in a showcase to waiting on a friend. So glad side two is getting some love!

Love this album, I really enjoyed the commentary, there was a lot of facts I didn’t know. Canadian pressing here. Tattoo You was my very first introduction to the Rolling Stones in my early teens and it absolutely blew me away. Great great record. One of my all time favourites.

I was 11 when it came out, and a friend of mine bought it, and we listened to it a lot along with my copy of VH Fair Warning, which came out the same year. Saw the Stones in 89 at Legion field in Bham. They were in their early 40's and still had a lot left in the tank. Probably the best concert to date. Very good commentary Tim👍

Great video....always say that side 2 is a masterpiece! Heaven is probably one of the most underrated songs in the in college hanging out in our house partaking in college activities with that song blaring from the house....
Another underrated side 2 is from the Eagles and Hotel California....all the hits on one side and the deep classic tracks on side 2...

Thanks for the great overview Tim! This album has been on my shortlist for a while. Today I stopped by a record store in the university area of town and went to the used bin. Lots of older Stones and beat up copies, then one more flip and there it was! The RL Europop pressing! The jacket is in G to VG condition, the disk is VG++! I brought it home and gave it a cleaning and it looks immaculate, I will give it a spin tonight....oh and $14!

Update: I've listened to Side 2 and it really is magnificent. Seriously excellent.

Found my 1981 pressing with RL in the dead wax like your copy. Haven’t thought about listening to it for years, but thanks to you I sat through side 2 early this morning as requested. It was a great experience and loved “Waiting On A Friend.” Just installed a new external tube phono preamp with a SUT for an MC cart. So it turned out to be a perfect record to test. Thanks again Tim for your inspiration!

I too have the Europadisk copy. I pulled it from the shelf and you are absolutely right! Even though it has a few scuffs and sounds a little scratchy the quality of sound deep in the grooves sounds amazing. Such a joy to listen to. I enjoy the song Heaven. Pure psychedelic.
