You're welcome and I'm glad you're standing up to your contractor. Some of these guys and gals get a little carried away and it really isn't fair.

What?...How DUMB must a customer be to NOT notice the 3 checks equal more than $2500?...Come on now...You deserve to get ripped off if you dont notice this

The reason why he asked for those amounts is keep the bank from putting a hold and most likely use walmart to cash and run

Thank you. This helps. Because we just finished our house and the contractor asking more money, so now we know we have to say no!

I honestly can't tell you how sorry I am and these are some of the reasons why I make videos for homeowners as well as contractors. The sad thing is, if we don't educate ourselves, we will end up being taken advantage of by doctors, dentists, lawyers and of course contractors. Anyone who's reading this comment should gather as much information as they possibly can about their next project, before hiring a contractor for doing the project themselves.

This video was exactly my situation right now. Contractor shows up on Saturday by himself. Work is supposed to be finished on Monday. I have been making payments all during the job and owe $1500 still. He tells me he needs an additional $1500 and get this. He doesn't need it for materials or labor. He tells me that he under bid the job on accident and is only going to make $450 profit. So basically...he just wants me to give him $1500 for funsies. I told him "I'll see what I can do. His subs are here now finishing up. Hopefully he won't show up until they're done and I will give him the $1500 owed and record the conversation. What a joke. Thanks for the info.

Contractors are clever. Wasn't scammed by AquaGuard Waterproofing Corporation but failing to tell me they would sub out the entire job, unsupervised and un-inspected, was 1). Disappointing and 2). A disaster. The subcontractor was unlicensed and disreputable but THEY insisted on sending him back time and again! Result: 1) Covered my interior basement walls with exterior roofing tar, 2) Drainage system installed is useless. Suffered $50K in contract damages on a job of less than $19K.

Many contractors and mechanics think it is fair game to cheat people if they can. They think the client is to blame for being ignorant. It doesn't make them clever, it makes them crooks. Let's see the same guys come in for medical care and how much they know about it. I am pretty sure they would expect the health care providers to be honest and fair with them.

I'm an electrician and people like this make everyone who's above board in the industry look bad. 90% of the jobs I do I can tell the home owner is legit afraid i'm going to scam him/her. You should not pay a contractor more than what has been quoted for your job. For pricing, everyone is different but for myself I do this:

I come in to quote, give you written copy of quote, You accept, I buy materials, you pay 50%, I open permit, I show you cost of materials with copy of receipt, I do work to finish stage, you pay 40%, I get inspector to pass work, I do finish work, you pay last 10% and we shake hands.

This makes sure neither of us gets scammed. don't pay me? I return materials. Think you can finish it half way through on my permit? I close my permit and your house is shambles. I don't show up? you have written copy of quote with receipt for 50% payment. I only do half the work? you only paid for half the work and I have an open permit you can contest.

I also ALWAYS say if its not written on the quote (which I do a walk through with the customer) then it doesn't get done. Want something else done while im here? that's an extra, I don't work for free. Amazing what people think a contractor will do for free..."well your here to do a panel upgrade, Can you run a new outdoor plug? shouldn't take long, I'm already paying for you" Nope, extra 50$ or not happening.

Good for you. I'm not about to suggest the contractors don't deserve to make more money, but to continue nickel and dime their customers to death, never seemed like good business practice to me.
