HOW MY LIFE IS LINKED WITH ST. CHARLES LWANGA AND COMPANIONS AND ST JOHN XXIII AND MY BIRTHDAY.

I will like to give a recap of some events which link me to this great saints.
St. Charles Lwanga and his companions have their feast day on the 3rd of June the date Charles Lwanga was martyred. All of them were not martyred on the same date since Charles was their leader the Church decided to honour them on his martyrdom day. I was born on the 11th October not 3rd June and was given the name Charles Lyonga my name sake being a friend of my Dad now retired Chief Supredendent Mola Charles Lyonga Wotany. When I went to the Minor Seminary Bishop Rogan College I had a class mate Charles Lwanga and many people confused my Lyonga with his Lwanga and after forms one he left but everyone kept calling me Charles Lwanga. It also happened that the name of my dormitory was St. Charles Lwanga's dormitory. The cleanest dormitory during our days there. When I became a religious as the tradition holds that we have to Change our names I proposed three names ,Damian Joseph Mary, Charles Augustine Mary and Charles Lwanga Maria Pio. My superiors gave me Charles Lwanga Maria Pio.
Now the story around me and this saint. Their canonization process was programmed by Pope St. John XXIII but he died before the canonisation , he was the Pope who started the second Vatican council on the 11th of October 1962. Remember my birthday is 11th October. Pope John XXIII who was devoted to these blessed Black martyrs happened to die on the 3rd June 1963.
A small biography of St. John xxiii.
Pope Saint John XXIII (Latin: Ioannes XXIII; Italian: Giovanni XXIII) born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, Italian pronunciation: [ˈandʒelo dʒuˈzɛppe roŋˈkalli]; 25 November 1881 – 3 June 1963) reigned as Pope from 28 October 1958 to his death in 1963 and was canonized on 27 April 2014 together with St. John Paul II and I was present in the Vatican on this day.
After his death Blessed Paul VI canonised our African Martyrs on the 18th of October 1964 during the Vatican II and they were the very first to be canonised with the new mass rite.
In honour of St John XXIII who was the brain behind the second Vatican Council the Church decided to honour him on the 11th October anniversary of the Vatican II which happened to be my birthday and the Ancient solemnity of Mary Mother of God.

The 22 Martyrs of Uganda Died 1886-1887 Charles was one of 22 Ugandan martyrs who were converted from paganism. He became a moral leader. He was the chief of the royal pages and was considered the strongest athlete of the court. He was also known as "the most handsome man of the Kingdom of the Uganda." He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith and he personally baptized boys pages. He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and homosexual demands of the Babandan ruler king Mwanga.

Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism. However, his chief assistant, Katikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule. The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifices to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom was converted to Catholicism?

When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burnt to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly to death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, "Kotanda! (O my God!)." He was burned to death by Mwanga's order on June 3, 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions on June 22,1964. We celebrate his memorial on June 3rd of the Roman Calendar. Charles is the Patron of the African Youth of Catholic Action.
