This is called a Western Union splice. My dad taught it to me. From the old telegraph days.

This post is obviously not by an electrician. What do you do when you want to open the splice to add another wire to it?
The usual splice with a wire nut is sufficient since the wire will be in a junction box with a cover on it. Not too many people go into their basement or in their attic and yank on cables.

Yep twisted wires and black tape will last a long time on a vehicle or anything outdoors.
