I would like to apologize for letting everyone down by giving in and joining in this degenerate practice. Never again will I abandon the traditional, biblical notation for subset and proper subset.

I once took a leap and said to one of my teachers that this notation is evil and he should not use it. Then he used it in class one day, later that day, he was hit by a bike and almost had died, luckily was okay and recovered. Then he never used it again in the classes I visit.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The notation I learned was actually a mix of the two: A ⊆ B for subset, A ⊊ B for proper subset. I think it’s much better than using ⊂ for subset, but it’s still just annoying.

At first, I strictly abided by the standard convention, but when I saw my professors using proper subset in the standard convention for subset I started to use the nonstandard proper symbol. I still use the standard subset symbol, but now for utmost clarity I use the nonstandard proper subset symbol. This is only in my submitted work though. I stick to the standard convention in my notes. I always feel so free doing scratch work. Writing rigorous proofs is fun, but it's a real pain to make them readable. If only my chicken scratch made sense to everyone! Then, I polished write-ups would be a thing of the past, and I'd be done in half the time! I must say, I have caught some mistakes/ missed steps cleaning up my proofs though. So, in the end its good to go back through your loose draft and fill in the details as you go. And when you do catch yourself, it's one of the proudest moments of solving the problem (aside from parsing what you must show and noticing the key insight to unlock the solution). Seriously, math homework in university is the best part of my week.
